BIOGRAPHY

The musical history of Texas is unsurpassed. A wealth of talent has and continues to call Texas home, and the tapestry woven by this artistic bonanza is immeasurable. In particular, West Texas is roots to legends and performers such as Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Roy Orbison, Bob Wills, Mac Davis, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock, to name abut a few. Always in the background, however, are the seminal influences … and amongst them, Tommy X Hancock is widely acknowledged as the Godfather of West Texas music.

Born and raised in Lubbock, he was pushed by his grandmother into violin lessons and was trained classically. But music couldn’t have been further from his mind. At age 16, he joined the service, traveling overseas as a paratrooper and in the Military Police. Yet destiny had music in mind. In 1946, after service, he followed the path of least resistance, and returned to Lubbock where he put together a popular swing band, The Roadside Playboys, and eked out a living in the rough and tumble honky tonk culture of West Texas. There were dues to be paid. Tommy anted up and played good hands for years, becoming a regional idol as he aimed to set free the repressive cultural spirit of those times.

Along the way, Tommy met his wife Charlene, and together they created a musical family, spending 10 years on the road polishing their skills and bringing joy to others. In a converted school bus, as the Supernatural Family Band, much like Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, they roamed the Rocky Mountains in search of truth, beauty, music and fun.

When it was settling down time, Austin was the natural choice. Known as the "Live Music Capital of the World", Austin embraced Tommy and his family. In March, 2000, Tommy and Charlene were inducted into the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame. Now retired from playing, Tommy loves to live and lives to dance. Charlene and 2 of his 8 children, daughters Conni and Traci, lead a popular dance band called The Texana Dames that perform regularly in Austin and throughout the state. When and wherever they play, Tommy’s there and the subtle force of his magnetism calls countless people of all ages to the dance floor, where their lives are graced by his charm and wisdom, and their bodies are rocked by his "get up and boogie" philosophy.

Most of all, Tommy’s a regular guy and people love him for it. He’s unique in his willingness to live honestly and authentically, with an open mind and a big heart. Something rare and precious that shines through Tommy is his love and respect for women. He is truly a gentleman, and a gentle man. He inspires men to honor women, and to see that through honoring women, humanity is served, and is not separate from a man’s own best interest. The message of his life is timeless and clear: Be true to love. Enjoy life. Treat each other with kindness and respect. Live with awareness. Simply put, life is a dance … and Tommy wishes for everyone to be out there on the dance floor of life having fun, feeling good, being active and moving with the muse. His message and presence are food for the hungry soul. No doubt about it … the family, friends and acquaintance of Tommy stand in a long, long line to testify of his complicity in the good times of their lives.
